Justice & Mercy

Home > Justice

Dedicated to social justice and community involvement.

Ames UCC has a long history of practicing both justice and mercy as acts of faith.

Merciful acts are those which soothe body, mind, and spirit. They include feeding people on the third Saturday of each month at Food at First, giving away 20% of all monies raised in capital campaigns, and delivering meals to those in need through Meals on Wheels and at the Emergency Residence Project. To learn more about and participate in any and all of these activities, please subscribe to our weekly e-newsletter here.

Acts of justice are those which prevent the need for merciful acts. Meaning, they end systems of abuse and create opportunities for equality. To that end, we are a member of AMOS: A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy. AMOS is an alliance of 35 churches and social service agencies in Story and Polk counties. As the AMOS website reads:

"Through face-to-face, one-on-one meetings, AMOS members build relationships between members of our communities. In the process, we cut through divisions such as race, religion, and socioeconomic status, and discover the passions and concerns that unite us all.

AMOS pursues a multiple issue agenda, responding to the concerns and pressures felt by communities. These concerns and pressures are identified through hundreds of small group conversations, and then explored in depth by investigative issue teams who research the facts and develop solutions to concrete problems.

AMOS then acts publicly, bringing the power of organized people to decision makers to implement the AMOS agenda. Through this process, hundreds of people enter public life and claim responsibility for their future here in central Iowa."

In 2016, our participation in AMOS led to the creation of the Story County Housing Trust Fund Task Force, co-chaired by Pr. Eileen. This effort culminated in the establishment of the Story County Housing Trust Fund, a permanent source of funding for affordable housing projects, rental assistance, and home rehabilitation for families in Story County.
