2023 Ames UCC Lenten Season’s Campaign Against Hunger
This year during Lent, our Youth and Children groups have joined up with the SOJO Team to develop a program for the entire church titled “Campaign Against Hunger” to help us learn about hunger and to practice what God is calling us to do to eliminate hunger and to reduce its devastatingly negative impacts. We’re kicking off our Campaign Against Hunger on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd, at our congregational dinner. Activities during Lent, which are designed for all ages, will include participating in the Bread for the World Letter Offering (a national policy action) and collecting non-perishable foods, household supplies and toiletry items to be donated to Bridge Home and Food At First. We'll also collect loose change offerings to donate to the Ames School District to help reduce their budget deficit due to providing vital meals for hungry students. We hope you’ll join with us this Lenten Season in which we embody God’s work for justice around this critical need.
You do not need to attend Wednesday church activities in order to be involved in the Campaign Against Hunger. Non-perishable foods, household supplies and toiletry items, and loose change, can be dropped off at the church office during office hours or brought on Sundays. If you would like to be part of the Letter Offering, check out this link to the Bread for the World website for more information http://www.bread.org/ol. A direct link to submit a letter can be found here: shttps://go.bread.org/page/48001/action/1. We’re keeping track of numbers of letters (paper and email modes), so please let us know if you send emails, and let us mail paper letters as we’re sending them together to each Congressperson. Youth are encouraged to send emails/letters, and artwork by younger children can be included with paper letters for a big impact with our elected officials.
P.S. The Bread for the World website has important information that supports their recommendations for the Farm Bill, their advocacy work, and about hunger in the U.S. and around the world. Here is the link to their website if you would like to learn more: https://www.bread.org/.
